Regular passport (32 pages) and Maxi passport (64 pages) are issued to a South African citizen who are above the age of sixteen (15½).  Regular and Maxi passports are valid for 10 years.

All applicants must appear personally at the Embassy by prior appointment. Please e-mail bern.consular@dirco.gov.za

REQUIRED DOCUMENTS

  • Proof of citizenship. i.e.: copies of any South African document with 13-digit-ID number
  • Parents’ full names, place/country of birth, birthdate and SA ID numbers (if applicable) should be available. This information is very important.
  • Current or expired South African passport/ID plus a clear copy of data page
  • Police report in English, if previous passport stolen or lost or misplaced
  • South African unabridged birth certificate and a clear copy
  • Swiss/Liechtenstein residence permit plus a clear copy
  • Four (4) colored passport photographs (no facial expressions such as smile, frown, etc.)
  • Application forms of applicants who are between the ages of 16-18 should be signed by both parents.
  • Female South African citizens who are changing their surnames because of marriage or divorce, must request such change in the form of a letter.
  • European version of Marriage Certificate or Divorce Decree (in English) and a clear copy.
  • In case of Maxi passport, a motivation letter on letterhead and signed, explaining the need of such passport. If the reason is “few pages left but passport is valid for longer than one year”, please make copies of each page of your current passport.
  • Documents issued in foreign languages must be officially translated into English
  • No cash payment is accepted at the Embassy. Application fees to be made online.  The information will be provided to you during your appointment.
  • Self-addressed-stamped envelope for the return of documents.

Please print/copy documents before attending your appointment.  The Consular staff will no longer make any copies or print documents on your behalf.

N.B.: All applications are evaluated and documents are printed in Pretoria, therefore the Embassy has no influence on the processing time of the application.
